Terminology of library and information science in the Czech and Slovak Republics. Present state, developing trends, practical solutions. Seminar - Brno, Moravian Library, Oct 14, 2003

Papers from seminar Terminology of library and information science in Czech Republic and Slovak Republic M. Jelínek (Terminology and language culture) deals with the background of terminology in language culture; he explores impact of language standard and orthography on terminology management and describes some term characteristics (polysemy, synonymy). ©. Kimlička (Library and information science in the frame of new subject and branch nomenclature in the Slovak Republic) presents history and state-of-the-art of terminology of “library and information science” concept and reports about subject of study “library and information science” in recent Slovak education system. A. Čabrunová (Definition of information science terminology from point of view of borderline fields) attends to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary problems concerning information science (definition and interdisciplinary character of information science, relationships between information science and borderline fields, definition of basic categories of information science). J. Cejpek (Definition of branch “library and information science” for the purposes of further development of Czech terminological database of LIS) defines library and information science with philosophical and humanities backgrounds, focuses on function of mediation in social communication and differentiates between “broader” and “narrower” concepts of information science. A. Ďuricová (Some remarks on terms and their characteristics) deals with synonymy and polysemy with examples of terms from German legal language. Z. Uhlíř (Terminology and concepts in time of paradigm changes) provides critical analysis of some basic concepts of library and information science and bibliology (“book”, “document”, “material”, “catchword”, “codicology”, “text” and “work”) on the basis of reflexive function of terminology. G. ®ibritová (Bibliology - mythical or real-world field of science?) raises a question of concept “bibliology” and its terminology, definition of subject, theoretical models and relationships to borderline fields. J. Schwarz (Comparison of some features of recent Czech and Slovak terminological products) compares some formal and content features of two Slovak terminological vocabularies and Czech terminological database of library and information science.

The development of open eprint archives and alternative bibliographical services in information science area (E. Bratková) ... p. 254-269

New types of information resources and information services entered in information science area after 2001. So-called eprint archives and modern information services which are the alternative to known traditional commercial bibliographic services in information science area (LISA, ISTA, LLIS et al.), came into existence and successful development. The author describes, compares and evaluates main features of three international eprint archives, i.e. French @rchiveSIC, American DLIST archive and European E-LIS archive. The open archives principles, communication between archives and related information services on protocol of metadata harvesting OAI-PMH basis, and software are characterized. Special attention is devoted to types of archived documents, metadata specifications, used classification schemes, and services provided to authors of eprints and to end-users too. The fourth part characterizes the interesting information service in information science DoIS which came into existence in 1999. The model of the system, creation of database of common metadata, and provided services are described in details. The perspective of development of this information service is outlined. The record of an article from Czech journal in ReDIF format serves as a challenge to contingent cooperation of first-rate documents publishers in the Czech Republic with the DoIS system.
