Czech books published of the 20th century (B. Stoklasová - J. Jeřábková) ... p. 207 -211

At the end of the 20th century the National Library of the Czech Republic is publishing a CD-ROM with bibliographic records covering a majority of the books published in Czechia during the entire 20th century. Making 400,000 twentieth century records available in digital form is the product of the cooperative project "Making Czech Book Production of the 20th Century Available via the Internet and CD-ROM". Ten large Czech libraries: National Library of the Czech Republic, Moravian Library in Brno and all the state research libraries participated in the project. Characteristics of bibliographic records created during different time periods can serve as a guide to the development of the Czech National Bibliography during the 20th century. The paper describes the history of the project and the RETROCON technology.

Social and economic status of information professionals in present society: Private sector (M. Přibylová) ... p. 212-226

The world economic globalization and the consequent shift towards so called Information society, in which information and knowledge are perceived as a key strategic source, have resulted in re-evaluation of information work and are significantly influencing the socio-economic position of today's information professionals. Studies of Fritz Machlup, Marc Porat, Stana B. Martin and other scholars in the USA and other countries worldwide brought evidence of increasing share of information labour force of the total labour force and about increasing share of that part of information labour force which deals with information in non-routine ways. Because information professionals only a small part of information labour force and their number is increasing slower that the total information labour force, they face and have to deal with increasing competition on labour market. 1 competition also increases as information literacy within society increases. These conditions push information professionals for finding and developing new dimensions of their professional competencies. The attention has been paid to so called non-routine information activities, to "adding value" to information services. The Knowledge Management environment provides very good background for illustrating the new socio-economic role of information professionals, because in such environment they can utilize their professional competencies in the full scale. Based on analysis of the recent development, the shift from focusing on information to focusing on knowledge has become the critical step for today's information professionals it they want to reach competitiveness on today's labour market and to defence existence of their profession in the Information Society.
